Current Observation

Set inputs A and B using the toggle switches and observe how the AND gate processes the signals. The output will be HIGH (1) only when both inputs are HIGH (1).

Signal Flow Observation

Toggle the switches to observe the signal flow animation through the wires. Notice how the output changes only when both input signals reach the AND gate simultaneously as HIGH.

Definition

An AND gate is a fundamental digital logic gate that produces a HIGH (1) output only when all of its inputs are HIGH (1). If any input is LOW (0), the output is LOW (0).

Working Principle

The AND gate performs logical multiplication. It compares the logical states of its inputs and produces an output based on the AND Boolean operation. The gate can be implemented using diodes, transistors, or CMOS technology.

  • When both inputs A and B are HIGH → current flows through both paths → output is HIGH.
  • When any input is LOW → the circuit path is broken → output is LOW.

Truth Table Summary

The AND gate has 2 inputs and 4 possible input combinations. Only one combination (A=1, B=1) produces a HIGH output. The remaining three combinations produce LOW output.

Boolean Expression

Y = A · B  (also written as Y = A AND B, or Y = AB)

Industrial Applications

  • PLC Logic: AND gates are used in PLC ladder logic programming where multiple conditions must be true before an action executes.
  • Motor Interlocking: Two-hand safety controls require both buttons to be pressed simultaneously, using AND gate logic to start a motor.
  • Industrial Safety Systems: Safety interlocks ensure that multiple safety conditions (door closed, guard in place, emergency stop not pressed) are all met before machinery operates.
  • Digital Electronics: AND gates are building blocks of adders, multiplexers, decoders, and other combinational circuits.
  • Access Control: Multiple authentication factors (card + PIN) must both be valid before granting access.

Boolean Expression

Y = A · B

The dot (·) represents the AND operation in Boolean algebra. It is equivalent to multiplication in normal arithmetic for binary values.

Boolean Algebra Properties of AND

  • Identity Law: A · 1 = A
  • Null Law: A · 0 = 0
  • Idempotent Law: A · A = A
  • Complement Law: A · A' = 0
  • Commutative Law: A · B = B · A
  • Associative Law: (A · B) · C = A · (B · C)
  • Distributive Law: A · (B + C) = (A · B) + (A · C)

Current Calculation

A = 0, B = 0 → Y = 0 · 0 = 0

Two-Hand Safety Control

This demonstrates an industrial safety system. The motor starts only when both push buttons are pressed simultaneously. If either button is released, the motor stops immediately.

This AND gate logic prevents accidental operation and keeps the operator's hands away from hazardous machinery.
